Master Class: Bloody Mary

Whether you love it or hate it, the Bloody Mary is a fixture of brunch menus everywhere. And it relies on--what else?--the flavor of chilies to give it that trademark bite. Credit for the Bloody Mary goes to Ferdinand Petiot, a bartender who came up with the drink while working at Harry’s Bar in Paris. He later brought the cocktail to America after the end of Prohibition, changing the name to the Red Snapper at the request of his bosses at the St. Regis hotel in New York.

Pepper Jelly Daiquiri

Pepper jelly is an ideal cocktail ingredient. Thinned out to a syrup consistency, it can replace simple syrup in many of your favorite recipes. We’re particularly fond of pairing it with rum, like in this take on a classic daiquiri.

Pepper Jelly Daiquiri

Makes 1 cocktail

  • ½ ounce pepper jelly
  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • ¾ ounce lime juice

In a small container, heat the pepper jelly with ½ ounce of water in a microwave for 30 seconds, then stir to combine. Let cool.

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add the pepper jelly, rum and lime juice and shake well until frost forms on the outside of the glass. Strain into a chilled coupe, and serve.

Habanero Blackberry Bourbon

The coconut and berry notes of the habanero chili pepper make it perfect for pairing with summer cocktails made with fresh fruit.

  • 2 fl oz bourbon
  • 1 fl oz simple syrup
  • 2 fl oz fresh squeezed Orange Juice
  • 1/2 habanero chili, stemmed and seeded
  • 4 Blackberries
  • Lime wedge
  1. Combine bourbon, simple syrup and orange juice in a shaker and stir with ice.
  2. In a mason jar or high ball, muddle blackberries and habanero chili.
  3. Add ice and strain in the bourbon mixture.
  4. Garnish with a lime wedge.
